'Bob's Market' installation

This is a painting that was done about 11 years ago and was not for sale for a long time. My wife loved it and held onto it for all these years. The painting is based on a local market in Santa Monica where we lived when we were first married. There are a lot of memories to this painting To the right was a barbershop where I used to get my haircut for $7. Recently, my wife was ready to 'let go' of the painting and it sold through my gallery, High Desert Gallery, to a couple here in Bend. On Tuesday night, we personally delivered and installed the painting. Thanks Kent and Anne for the purchase!

This is definitely not one of my best executed painting technically(not that I ever have painted well) but it is a subject matter I had to get onto the canvas. There are alot of subject matters and ideas and spaces that float around in my head that seem very interesting to me but not necessarily translate successfully on canvas. Obviously I am not so much interested in the figure itself, but rather, I am more interested in composing as a whole: the figure, the setting, its essence and its position in context. This was something I just had to get off my chest.

Glazing, Gravity & Godspeed

OK, after being under the heater for a full day, the painting is dry 'to the touch'. I usually do my glazing with my painting lying flat. The reason for this is that I am relying on gravity to pull the pigments into the cracks and valleys of my brush strokes. This contributes to the grungy feel that I am after.

I have a few days to finish my last 3 paintings for the show, including this one. Sometimes i wish I painted in acrylics, as it dries instantly......nah, oils is still my favorite medium. It's funny when something was introduced to you at 18, it tends to stick with you. I was listening to Echo & the Bunnymen while I was doing this, by the way.

Dry painting,dry!

I threw out all my driers back in the 90's knowing that they were all very toxic: copal medium, cobalt drier, and Japan drier. So nowadays, I speed up the drying time on my paintings by heat only, and of course time. As you know, oil paintings do not dry by evaporation of water but rather oxygenation of the oil and pigments. After some research the only methods that would speed up the oils to a degree of solid form is to add heat and alcohol. So after I am done with a painting and need for it to dry quickly, I will spray a little alcohol and sit it in front of a heater. Titanium white and all cadmiums takes the longest to dry and surprisingly Yellow Ochre too! The reason for the rush is that I still do a glazing process after the painting is dried to the touch.

If anyone knows a better method, I'd love to know!

I have two big shows coming up this year: a four-person group show in April at my new local representation, BICA Gallery, and my first solo show in October at the A Gallery in Salt Lake City, Utah. So you will notice images that may or may not be familiar. When there is a specific request by clients, I will paint an image again, and this is an example of it. Although it may not appear that I am exploring new visions or continuing on a linear, progressive path, part of that journey is to revisit an old painting and doing it again to make it better, at least try to.

This is based on a local theater here in Bend, Oregon. I used several new pigments from Winsor & Newton for glazing this painting: combination of Transparent Brown Oxide and Transparent Gold Ochre, then when that dried, I finished it with an Indian Yellow glaze.

The Hanegraaf Easel

A very good friend of mine, Peter Hanegraaf whom I met in Pasadena, built a customized easel for me back in 1998. I remember when I spoke to him about it, he just jotted down a few notes and asked a few questions about what I wanted in design. All I wanted was an easel that could spin around and turn upside down because I liked to paint upsides down sometimes, especially when I get stuck creatively. A few weeks later, he surprised me with the beautiful easel mounted on a lazy susan. It is adjustable to accomadate small and large canvases and it also has a 'hand brake' to lock to whatever angle I set my canvas at.

It is now 2008, very close to 2009 and I am finally able to mount this easel onto my studio wall! I had it done tonight and I am very eager to use it. Why did it take so long for me to mount it? I am currently living in a house where my studio is finally big enough to accommodate a spinning wall mounted easel! Ten years, three cities and 4 children later I finally have this beautiful easel up and ready to go! I'm naming this the 'Hanegraaf Easel', after Peter. Peter, if you are reading this, you are a good man. Oh by the way, Peter built this for me free of charge. Good man indeed.

A gallery in Idaho called and was interested in seeing if my paintings will do well with their clients. And so I am sending these latest paintings. The train painting is an image I have done already, but trains always seem to do well so I gave it another whirl. Let's hope this gallery will be willing to take me on and represent me. It could never hurt to be represented in another state!

Here's my second take on an earlier painting I did of the 10 Freeway in L.A. I wasn't quite satisfied with how the first painting turned out (See post on 9/7/2008).

Finished with a Alizarin/Transparent Orange glaze, then a Transparent Earth Yellow glaze and lastly a Ultramarine Blue/Burnt Umber glaze on the bottom half, all with drying times in between.

Need to crate this up tonight and hopefully make it in for our annual Holiday Show!

My wife was dissappointed after I did my usual finishing glazes on this painting. According to her I lost some of the original vibrant colors. For some reason, I like to add a layer of grunge to all my paintings, and yes, I do lose some of the freshness every time i do it. I've always thought this was strange of me to do this considering I grew up in beautiful Hawaii. But then again, I did grow up in Kalihi which wasn't so beautiful part of Oahu. Those that know Honolulu who might be reading, you know what I'm talking about...

Anyways, the glazes that I concocted for this painting was a mixture of Sap Green and Burnt Umber on the ground and a mixture of Indian Yellow and Transparent Orange on the top half. Oil on canvas / 27" x 17"

I've always wanted to do this painting. I was excited when I started it. It didn't turn out as well as I wanted it too, but I will treat this as a warmup. My panoramic format, i feel, is so appropriate to communicate those crazy wide freeways of L.A.!
